A hypnotherapist is a skilled and trained professional who, by inducing a trance-like state, helps people use their subconscious mind to change behavioural patterns or ways of thinking. It is important that the client is really wanting to change their negative thoughts, feelings or behaviours in order for the hypnotherapist be able to help the client.
Content free means that unlike other therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapies) or other talking therapies that may have failed you in the past, we get right to the source of the issues that you may or may not be aware of by speaking and reprogramming the subconcious part of your mind. That’s why we have no need to be dragging up unneccessary past memories which you may not want to re-live etc or even be aware of! Your subconcious knows all and is quite capable, when prompted correctly under hypnosis, of resolving issues that arise without revealing the true nature of the issue ‘out loud’!
Uniformed people, armed forces, police etc. have very strong secrecy policies in place which means they cannot be exposed to revealing secrets about their past and current situations.By working content free it gives them the reassurance is needed to undergo hypnosis to help them with there issues without the need to put themselves at risk within their work or jobs.
All clients are treated with the utmost confidetiality anyway and only unless there is immediate danger to the client, ourselves or the public would anything ever be diclosed outside the therapy environment!
More than likely yes! In fact everyone can be hypnotised as it is a natural state that we enter into every day without knowing! How many times have you driven your car home and not really been aware of how you got there?? Have you been watching a film and then, boom, it’s the credits rolling up the screen!? Well, you’ve experienced hypnosis! It’s this altered state, daydreaming if you like, where your conscious brain wanders off and the subconcious brain takes over. The subconcius brain is millions times more powerful than the most powerful computer on earth and most of us never tap into its power! It is there to protect us and run all the ‘background’ tasks that our bodies do without us thinking about them. It knows how to do all the things we conciously do, (how do you think that you don’t crash when you ‘forget’ the drive home mentioned above??) and it can be accessed by using hypnosis that is deeper and more focussed than the light states we automatically fall in to. This is where a hypnotist comes in. They can guide you and teach you how to enhance this amazing state and whilst you are in it, make powerful suggestions to you to help you solve your issues. It’s not sleep, it’s not mind control, in fact it’s really you letting yourself actually deal with stuff once and for all that your subconcious has been holding on to or has got a wrong idea of sometime in your past!
Your subconcious mind is the most powerful asset that you have! If you’ve never thought about this next statement then strap in, it’ll literally open your mind to a new way of thinking!
So from the moment you are created your mind develops. Your subconcious mind is a blank canvas at that point and comes ‘pre-loaded’ (like a computer!) with an operating system that controls all your functions ie. breathing, blinking, hoe your limbs move, sight, hearing etc, how you’re going to develop into a n adult and grow older and it also starts to record everything you ever encounter and stores it away as you go through life…everything! Now the way it stores things is anything it seems as boring and non-essential it pops into a big ‘skip’ for want of a better description. Anything it finds important it will attach an emotion to and the bigger the emotion the more powerful the memory. What did you eat 2 years ago last Thursday? Can’t remember? Probably not because it has no emotional attachment to you. However what did you eat on your last birthday? Well if you spent it wth a loved one or ate somewhere special then you can recall it pretty easily! The point is here it has an emotional attachment.
Just like computers, as a comparison, we load up software into the computer and sometimes the ‘blank operating system’ gets adversly affected by this…the computer may run slower or even crash! Well sometimes the things we encounter in life are like programs that can affect us the same way! We were never born with any fears or phobias, we were never born with stress and anxieties…we picked thoise up along the way somewhere, somehow! The subconcious, to protect us, often locks these things away and doesn’t let us know why. It just attaches emotions to these memories and when we least expect it fires them up and then we wonder why! For example, if you see something you are scared of like a clown or a balloon or a spider or a needle etc then your subconcious finds all the times you’ve encountered this before and if you’re afraid it will make you have a physical reaction like hiding, trembling, creepy flesh etc to warn you that you dont like the offending subject! This could be a person, an object or even a situation. So imagine if we could reset the subconcious to not feel that emotion but a different one when it encouters the issue again??!! Well theres the point of Hypnotherapy. We are actually able to reprogramme how you react and help you overcome. If you can imagine it, then we can help you reprogramme it!
NOTE we are unable to help you if you suffer from certain types of mental conditions. For example psychosis or schizophrenia or are taking some sorts of medications. Yes! Hypnosis is very safe indeed. Sadly most people have a very tainted view of Hypnosis because all they know about it is what they may have seen at a Stage show or a street performance where people look like they are ‘under the control’ of the hypnotist!! This is far from reality in the world of Hypnotherapy however. Although the techniques used for both entertainment and therapy are the same, a therapist is not there to entertain you and make you bark like a dog or dance like a chicken (although if that’s what you want to do then feel free to ask 😉 )
Hypnosis is an altered state of mind, like daydreaming if you will or driving along a road and not really knowing how you got to your exit! Therapy uses this ‘altered state’ that anyone can naturally enter, enhances it and then helps you make changes to your way of processing and thinking at a subconcious level! It really is that easy for you to do and just imagine the possibilities you can achieve by tapping into this under used resource for the good. If a stage hypnotist can make you think youre a chicken and act like one, the just imagine now what a therapist can make you think you can be….more confident, less stressed and anxious, unafraid of phobias, make youbelieve youvenever smoked and can’t smoke or even make youhealthier in your lifestule and way you conduct yourself!
The mind is very powerful, and to one degree or another everyone is susceptible to suggestion; the hypnotherapist will determine an individual’s degree of suggestibility by guiding them through some exercises.
Before hypnotizing the client, the therapist will discuss in detail the problem that needs to be resolved and the goal that the individual would like to achieve. The hypnotherapist will also explain what hypnosis is, how the mind will be operating in its subconscious state and what will be experienced during hypnosis and how it will work to help the individual.
Finally, based on the results of the client’s suggestibility and the nature of the problem or goal, your hypnotherapist will induce a hypnotic state. The therapy will become more individualized and have a greater impact if the hypnotherapist can share in the experience of the client.
The goal of the hypnotherapy sessions is to help you identify what changes you want to make and then find ways in which you can achieve this. You might do this by seeing things from a fresh perspective, by understanding where your problems come from, by using your existing knowledge and skills differently or by learning new coping strategies. A variety of techniques is likely to be involved, and you may be asked to carry out tasks, practise or planning between sessions. All information given in a therapy session is treated as confidential. Most therapy is given on a one to one basis. However, arrangements can be made for small groups wishing to work together on the same issue.
No, in fact quite the opposite. Stage hypnotists work hard to make what they do seem like mind control because it makes a better act. Most people seeking hypnotherapy do so because they have already lost control in some way (for example continuing to smoke when they don’t really want to). The goal of therapy is to get that control back again.
Quite understandably, this is one of the most commonly asked questions. Unfortunately, it can also be the most difficult to answer. Every person and every situation is different, and so is every course of hypnotherapy. It’s a bit like booking driving lessons. You can guess how many lessons you’ll need based on averages, but you don’t know for sure till you get behind the wheel! Working on averages, I usually suggest starting with four sessions. If you can see value in booking more when these are complete, I am happy to do this. A structured programme is offered to those wishing to quit smoking or work with IBS, so slightly different arrangements apply, please call and I can assure that our initial consultation is FREE and you are under no obligation to continue if you feel this is not for you!
The Million Dollar Question! And the best answer is ‘it depends on you’. As you can see above, hypnotherapy can be very successful but it’s also an interactive process, which means we work together and you play a vital, active role in your therapy. So, if you are looking for a quick fix or a ‘magical’ answer, then the answer is no. If you want someone else to take responsibility for your difficulties, or to do all the work so you don’t have to, then the answer is no. If the only reason you are considering therapy is that someone else thinks there’s a problem, but you don’t, then the answer is probably no. But if you want to change, can be open-minded about hypnosis, and are willing to play an active part in achieving your goals, the answer is yes. If you want more, see this comparison of hypnotherapy and other therapies which also supports what I’ve said above about the number of sessions required.
